Home Safety

Preventable injuries associated with home hazards, such as falls from fractured hips due to tripping over doorsills or unsecured area rugs, are major causes of disability and the 5th leading cause of death for older adults. Minor situations often ignored or undetected can escalate into greater safety hazards.

Repeated episodes of food left cooking unattended can advance from scorched pans to apartment fires with causalities. In this section, you will find information on fire hazards from the United States Fire Administration and the New York City Fire Department.

In addition to fall prevention and fire safety, clutter and hoarding are frequently requested topics by service providers. We hope you find the resources listed in this section helpful, including assessment tools, therapeutic protocols, practical de-cluttering guidelines, and proceedings from our 2004 conference, When Hoarding Causes Suffering: Working Together to Address a Multi-faceted Problem.
